Party #2: Friends Christmas Party

26 Dec

For the past 12 years I have been throwing a Christmas party for my high school friends.  It is one of my favorite nights of the year, as this many of us only get together once a year.  We do see each other over the course of the year, just not all at the same time.  There was a great turn out this year, about 25 people.  I began party prepping on Thursday had most things set up by the time the party started.

I had made cookies with everyone’s names on them and decorated.  It took a while to make, but was worth it. I used the Wilton glitter gel and sprinkles for decorating.  Courtney saw the gift tags for work and asked if she was going to get one as well.  So I made some more dough for cookie tags and there was enough to make cookies for the roommates before they headed off to New York for the holidays.

Everyone loved their cookies;  Esk was touched as she had never had a cookie with her name on it before.  However Johnny didn’t see there were names on the cookies and ate Dylan’s.  Tim liked his cookie because it had a bow tie on it and Mat stopped to pose for a picture with his cookie.  Not many people ate their cookies, but I gave them baggies so they could take them home.

Each year we do a Yankee Swap and for the first time ever I had number 1. (makes up for all those years of crappy numbers) Every year the same Homer Simpson Chia pet gets put into the grab.  Homer has been around for about five or six years now; we are not certain on the statistics.  If you get the Chia pet then you have to bring it back the following year but add something to it.

In addition to Homer there were two other re-gifts from years past; the Obama chia pet that was partially grown and a pink cat piggy bank.  (So I did put the cat back in; Megan came across it when she was moving to California and somehow was not deemed worth enough to make the trip)  As number one I could choose whatever gift I wanted.  For a long time the Stoli and cranberry juice was what I wanted, but then a Sam Adams gift set with scratch tickets came up towards the end.  Mar and Erica were each trying to persuade me which gift to take since I would be taking from one of them.  The gift set included the Sam Winter Lager pint glass with snowflakes on it.  (I tried to get take glass from a local pub, but was unsuccessful)  Once I saw the glass was in the set, my decision was made. (Sorry Erica!)  The scratch tickets were losers, but that is OK.  Here are a few pictures from the swap:

The signature cocktail this year was Cranberry-Pomegranate martinis  Here is the recipe:

  • vodka
  • triple sec
  • prosecco
  • Pom juice
  • Cranberry pomegranate juice
  • lime juice
  • cranberries
  • limes

I am not sure exactly how many pitchers were made in total, but it was quite a few.  I also had quite a few drinks in my new wine glass. (I was in my own apartment after all) The last batch was especially potent, and I was definitely feeling it the next morning.

Here are some more highlights from the party:

Athena, Tim, Allison and Dylan stayed a bit later than everyone so I was able to catch up with them.  This is also when we realized that Allison was a little drunk.  She went to the bathroom and thought that Christmas music played when the toilet flushed.  It is actually the soap dispenser that plays the music but Allison was a bit confused about that.   I would say that the party went rather well and Athena and Baka both gave me Reese’s trees.
